At the end of S.2 a learner is expected to drop some subjects and continue with only ten (10). Out of the ten, eight are compulsory including: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History and Christian Religious Education (C.R.E). The learner is given opportunity to choose any other two from remaining subjects to have a maximum of ten subjects, which he/she sits for at the end of S.4 in order to obtain a Uganda Certificate of Education (U.C.E).

Uganda’s education system is designed in such a way that a learner keeps on dropping some subjects as he/she advances to higher levels. At S.5, a learner is expected to form a combination comprising of three (03) subjects. On top of the three subjects, a learner is supposed to add on General Paper and either Subsidiary Mathematics or Subsidiary ICT.

Because academics are considered a priority in Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga, learners’ progress in acquisition of knowledge and skills is monitored and followed up at a number of levels. At the classroom level, each stream is assigned a class teacher who monitors the academic progress of each child. Class teachers convene meetings with their classes on a weekly basis to evaluate learning, discipline and A.O.B of the class. It is the role of a class teacher to advise other teachers teaching that particular class on any academic concerns of his/her class or particular learner.

ACADEMIC PARENTING

On top of a class teacher, each learner is obliged to choose a teacher of his/her choice whom we refer to as the academic parent. An academic parent performs the role of a parent in fostering a child’s academic performance. It is the academic parent a learner can run to as an alternative for the biological parent.

ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS

Almost every subject constitutes a department that ensures excellence of all learners in a particular subject. All teachers that teach a particular subject are automatically members of a departmental committee of that subject. Each department has a Head (H.O.D) who is appointed by the school administration. It’s the Head of Department’s obligation to convene departmental meetings to forge ways on how learners can excel in their subject. The H.O.D reports and advises the Dean of Studies (D.O.S) on how a particular subject can be taught and passed well. The Head of Department is fully responsible for successes and failures in the subject he/she heads.

OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDIES

The Dean of Studies department is divided into two offices, Dean in charge of ‘O’ level and Dean in charge of ‘A’ level. Both offices work hand in hand to ensure academic excellence of the school. Both offices report and advise the Deputy Head teacher in charge of academics on matters concerning academics. The Dean of Students’ office is directly responsible for the academic excellence/failure of the school.

ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT

In Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga, we employ a continuous assessment method. Our learners are examined and assessed in three (03) sets of exams in a term. These exams include: Beginning of term exams (B.O.T), Weekly done exams (SATURDAY TESTS) and End of term exams (E.O.T). Learners need to take all the three exams serious because each contributes a certain percent on the final mark at the end of the term. B.O.T contributes 15%, Saturday tests 15% and E.O.T 70% respectively.

ACADEMIC WEEK

A full week is gazetted in each term where parents and guardians come to school and check on the academic performance and progress of their children. This is an important time when parents/guardians meet class teachers/subject teachers to a way forward together in areas where their children do perform to their expectations. It is the only formal avenue where a parent, a teacher and a learner convene on matters concerning academics of the learner.

ACADEMIC AWARDS

Every term an academic assembly is organized where all students gather to get academic motivation from the teachers and administrators. The best five students from each class are awarded gifts as a way of motivating them to keep reading hard in order to maintain their good performance. Gifts commonly awarded include: Academic giant T-shirts, Scholastic materials, Blankets, Flasks, Umbrellas, etc. While the best performing students are awarded gifts, the rest are encouraged to read hard such that they can also win gifts in other academic assemblies to come. Those students that exhibit an excellent academic performance consistently may receive academic bursaries in form of school fees. In national exams, each student who scores the maximum grade (8 in 8 aggregates in U.C.E or 20 points in U.A.C.E) is rewarded with a million Uganda Shillings (1,000,000).

ADMISSION CRETERIA

We admit all kinds of students from different backgrounds with no discrimination on Gender, Religion or Race. As long as one meets our academic requirements and the vacancies are still available, a student stands a chance of being admitted in S.1, S.2, S.3 and S.5. Admission forms are obtained at the school on presentation of results attained by the applicant in the previous exams
